The shadow can come in two forms: a penumbral, which is a less dense outer portion of the Earth's shadow and creates a subtle shading effect on the moon, or a more dramatic umbra, which is the inner portion of the Earth's shadow where the light from the Sun is completely blocked out. When the Moon is fully within the umbra, it takes on a dark, red-orange glow, a phenomenon known as a "blood moon."
